“ In his “Storia del cinema italiano”, Lizzani acutely defined him “the great confessor of the Italian lower middle classes, sweetly slumbering through the twenty years of Fascism”. Together with Blasetti, Camerini was the most important director of this era, making his debut appearance behind the camera in 1923 with “Jolly, clown da Circo”. He set out to make dramatic-realist cinema with “Rotaie” (1929), which tells the dramatic story – with a happy ending – of two penniless youngsters.” From Biography of Mario Camerini. Rai.it.
